Tay Gallery Kanata is pleased to present new abstract paintings by Anne Barkley  until May 31, 2012  in a solo exhibition ” A Sense of Place .

 Anne Barkley is an abstract painter based in Ottawa region near Cornwall. She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists ( SCA) and has exhibited in Ottawa, Toronto, New York and Florence Italy. Through her work, Barkley endeavours to capture something of the spirit of people and their environments.  Barkley’s recent work explores abstract paintings that begin with a landscape orientation. These various land and city scapes invite the viewer to enter and negotiate the implied spaces to study what is seen or imagined.

We are pleased to welcome  guest artists  Ted Duncan and Denis Larouche to the gallery this month.

Ted Duncan, Kanata area artist presents a number of encaustic work of urban landscapes in this show.  Duncan paints in various media, encaustic and/ or in combination with oil and alkyd paint. He also  paints in watercolours and pastel, recently a series of figure paintings of musicians at their craft.  Most of his painting effforts are placed on design and happenstance patterns in the world. His emphasis is to limit the pictorial considerations of his images  – emphasizing elements of line shape, colour, and texture of of design and pattern while still working within a representional mode.Ted Duncan is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour and a Fellow of the Ottawa Watercolour Society.

Denis Larouche,  OCAD alumnus and Gatineau area artist  paints impressionistic waterscapes and landscapes.  His fascination with the idea in physics  that light, matter and  energy originate  from a single source has led to a more stylized imagery in his paintings where the treatment of open space becomes the real focus. The subject itself becomes  key leading into this space and the interpretation of its content. The treatment becomes a search in itself, obeying laws and a logic that exist only within the painting. Larouche  has participated in solo and group exhibitions in the region and is a member of regional art associations . His work is hung in corporate and private collections across Canada.

Paulette Sauve  presents  abstracted landscapes that emphasize colour, texture and form in her latest landscape series. Paulette Sauve , Vercheres area resident, is an award winning artist with a Masters in Fine Arts degree. Much of her inspiration is found in lakes and marshed of Ontario, Quebec and New England states. She has obtained grants and awards from the Canada Arts Council, Quebec Cultural Affairs Grant Program and 50th Golden Jubilee Medal awarded by Governor General of Canada. Her work is found in  corporate, public and private collections in USA , Europe and Canada.

Twyla Webster is a Canadian artist known primarily for her renditions of the countryside of the Rideau/Ottawa Valley.  Using brush or palette knife, she creates works of rich colour and pervasive strength in a powerfully expressive style. A professional artist for many years, she was born in Federicton New Brunswick in 1953, raised and educated in Toronto, graduating with an Honours BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts degree ) from York University. Twyla has numerous works housed in corporate as well as private collections across Canada.

Terry Ananny, Ottawa area artist  has recently signed a   contract with UNICEF and Hallmark  Cards to have two of her paintings featured on cards.  The cards will be available  in boxed sets at  Hallmark stores.  The images selected for the cards  are  from the painting “Snow All About” , from a 24 x 30 inch acrylic painting (see above)  and “One Last Skate” .  Terry Ananny has been part of the UNICEF greeting card program since 1998 with 12 images selected for cards over the years. Terry’s bright and colourful paintings of children at play in the great Canadian outdoors cheerfully recapture unique magical moments of childhood.

We introduce Julie Himel to the gallery this month as spotlight artist from Toronto.

Julie Himel is a Toronto painter primarily investigating the human condition through quiet moments of inner reflection. Figures are enveloped in personal spaces, absorbed in meditative activities. While the subjects look inward,the paintings question the thoughts in the mind of the subject, the subtext of the scene, the potential of the near future. When the figures are removed from the view, still life and interior paintings result as portraits just the same.  Table settings, a chair in a room, or even a bar of soap and toothbrushes resting in a cup at the sink attempt to capture the personalities and relationships of the people dwelling in those spaces. The source of Julie’s imagery is photography, though photorealism is not the goal. Executed in oil paint on canvas or board, and using a modified or personalized impasto technique, brushstrokes remain visible.  A painterly rendering of the depth and character that is but a moment caught on film (or digitally) is what is attained.  Each brushstroke carries energy, thought and care.  Preserving those marks adds layers of emotion to the images.  Julie Himel has a Fine Art Diploma from Langara College, a BFA from York University,and a Graduate Diploma from the Toronto School of Art and  her work can be found in private collections internationally, and public collections in Canada and the United States.

Returning  Montreal artist Susan Jillette , SCA  exhibits a selection of  her  portraits of women with  elaborate backgrounds and strong  colour palette  and  expressing  a range of  human emotions and personalities  portrayed in a light vein.

Gallery artists Marianna Mikhaylyan and Terry Ananny  are featured artists this month  exhibiting a number of   new  figure paintings .  Marianna Mikhaylyan paints  in her fluid loose brush style  with romance,  intrigue and tenderness addressed . Terry Ananny exhibits a number of new works in her  highly recognizeable naive style  - joyful and colourful paintings of children at play in the Canadian winter.

 New pastels by Sharon Fox Cranston and Guy Cranston have arrived and are displayed  in the gallery  with other work by gallery artists  in addition to the feature show exhibit .
