Matters of the Heart opens at Tay Gallery Kanata February 1 , featuring Julie Himel, Susan Jillette, Marianna Mikhaylyan and Terry Ananny. Four artists with a focus on the human figure with very distinct styles and interpretations .

We introduce Julie Himel to the gallery this month as spotlight artist from Toronto.

Julie Himel is a Toronto painter primarily investigating the human condition through quiet moments of inner reflection. Figures are enveloped in personal spaces, absorbed in meditative activities. While the subjects look inward, the paintings question the thoughts in the mind of the subject, the subtext of the scene, the potential of the near future. When the figures are removed from the view, still life and interior paintings result as portraits just the same. Table settings, a chair in a room, or even a bar of soap and toothbrushes resting in a cup at the sink attempt to capture the personalities and relationships of the people dwelling in those spaces. The source of Julie’s imagery is photography, though photorealism is not the goal. Executed in oil paint on canvas or board, and using a modified or personalized impasto technique, brushstrokes remain visible. A painterly rendering of the depth and character that is but a moment caught on film (or digitally) is what is attained. Each brushstroke carries energy, thought and care. Preserving those marks adds layers of emotion to the images. Julie Himel has a Fine Art Diploma from Langara College, a BFA from York University, and a Graduate Diploma from the Toronto School of Art and her work can be found in private collections internationally, and public collections in Canada and the United States.

Returning Montreal artist Susan Jillette , SCA exhibits a selection of her portraits of women with elaborate backgrounds and strong colour palette and expressing a range of human emotions and personalities portrayed in a light vein.

Gallery artists Marianna Mikhaylyan and Terry Ananny are featured artists this month exhibiting a number of new figure paintings . Marianna Mikhaylyan paints in her fluid loose brush style with romance, intrigue and tenderness addressed . Terry Ananny exhibits a number of new works in her highly recognizeable naive style - joyful and colourful paintings of children at play in the Canadian winter.

New pastels by Sharon Fox Cranston and Guy Cranston have arrived and are displayed in the gallery with other work by gallery artists in addition to the feature show exhibit .

The new year begins with a selection of new paintings – visual candy - a “ Kaleidoscope” with intriguing patterns of colours and shapes that beg more than a casual glance . A closer study of the paintings on exhibit will reveal the complex and intricate patterns of technical artistry that make up the carefully crafted compositions, be it of a landscape, still life, figure work or abstract painting. Viewing is free and we would love you to take your time when you visit and really take in the paintings for the enjoyment they provide. It is a perk in this job to have art lovers come in regularly and enjoy the art we have hung. We would also be pleased to have you take a painting home with you if it is something you would like to live with and enjoy on a daily basis.

This month we feature works on paper with pastel paintings by Sharon Fox Cranston and Guy Cranston, and watercolour paintings by Len Sandeman and Cheryl Chartier.

Sharon Fox Cranston, SCA, PAC, lives in Prince Edward County with her husband Guy Cranston where they share a studio gallery on Main St. in the town of Bloomfield. Sharon ‘s early work was illustrative which enabled her to develop a solid understanding of drawing and composition. Her current focus is texture, colour and rhythm of the rural landscape with pastel as preferred medium. She has studied under accomplished artists such as Albert Handell, Richard McKinley, Teresa Saia, Colleen Howe and Andrew McDermott. Many of her works are painted “en plein air” in Canada, France, Italy, the UK and USA. Sharon Fox is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists, and signature member of Pastel Artists Canada, and member of The Federation of Canadian Artists, and Landscape Artists International.

Guy Cranston has been influenced by art all his life. Guy’s mother Stuart was a talented artist mentored by Kathleen Morris, a contemporary and associate of Canada’s Group of Seven. His sister Philippa is an accomplished writer and television producer. Guy’s elder brother Toller, is a well known Canadian artist who first wowed the world as an Olympic athlete. Guy was an accomplished wood carver for many years and excelled in creating large “one of a kind” gallery pieces turned on a lathe. He is still a member of the American Association of Woodturners and has competed at the AAW annual World Symposium. He has travelled with Sharon and painted throughout the west coast of Canada and the United States, France, Italy, the UK and Wales. Guy is a member of The Federation of Canadian Artists, Pastel Artists Canada, and Landscape Artists International and the Rideau Lakes Artist Association.

Her paintings can be found in collections the world over and are enjoyed for their strong colour and energetic movement and distinctly Canadian style. She has been represented by many galleries in Ontario in both solo and group shows . Cheryl is well known by art students as an art teacher, conducting art classes at her farm studio and for Wallacks Art Store over the past number of years. Her mediums include oil, acrylic pastel and watercolour.
