“Passages” at Tay Gallery in Kanata

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

Passages : Elle Chae and Venz Vesselinov

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Passages is the fall exhibition at Tay Gallery  featuring  paintings highlighting experiences of physical or mental travel,  growth, life stages, events and  personal transformation. The show runs from Oct. 1 – Nov 10 and features paintings by  Ottawa area artists Elle Chae and Venz Vesselinov.  Elle Chae’s  figurative paintings  express  passage on  a personal level as  recurring symbols and images of her dream state  become the focus of her paintings.  Venz Veselinov’s abstract urbanscapes and seascapes  highlight passages  in space and time  – many ports of travel depict a past moment in time and subjective experience of place.

Elle Chae was born in Incheon, South Korea and lived in South Korea and Fiji before moving to Ottawa. She obtained her BFA from the University of Ottawa in 2011. Elle’s paintings have been exhibited in Ottawa and Montréal.

Elle explains her painting process as  a synthesis of  realism and expressionism:   “Based in figurative painting, my artistic practice is motivated by my interest in human psychology.  Dream-based ideas or the emotions derived from dreams usually serve as the impetus for painted subjects. The images are then filtered through a personal prism of memories and emotions.  From the repeated process of stratified and instinctual construction and deconstruction of forms and perspectives will emerge the final painted figures. Although my interest in dream and application of chance are driven by Surrealists’ approach of art-making process, I consider my practice as continuous study of synthesizing realism and expressionism.”

Venz Vesselinov graduated from the  National Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria with a Master of Fine Arts degree. He worked with various publishing houses, press media and art galleries. This collaboration, as well as his position as an art director with the leading Publishing House ‘Profizdat‘ (1986-1990), resulted  in over 50 illustrated books and book covers, posters, and numerous newspaper and magazine editorial illustrations.  In 1994 Venz immigrated to Canada and settled in St. John‘s, NL. There he co-founded and ran ‘Vis-a-Vis Inc.‘, a graphics design company.  In Montreal, he worked in the animation and film industry, first as a character designer and animator, and later – as a storyboard artist. Since 2004 Venz has been residing in Ottawa, Ontario, where he works as an artist.

Venz’s vivid palette and  subject matter reveals  emotive snapshots of various places the artist experienced  in the  time of encounter.  As  described by Venz , his paintings draw a viewer’s interest with  maybe  a spark of memory or lightheartedness  of a past moment and place in time:  “These paintings reach inward to the core of our human emotions. And, like in life itself, they follow the rhythm of our hearts.”
