Stephen Rothwell

Biography

Stephen has become well known for innovation within the world of watercolour. His loose style, bold colour, ability to capture light and versatility to paint a variety of subjects has created an ever-increasing demand for his paintings and workshops. He enjoys sharing the expertise he has gained over the years with students anxious to emulate his distinctive style and learn the innovative technique he has developed for “watercolour without glass.”
Travel has been, and continues to be a vital aspect of Stephen’s art career. Trips to the Baltic, Spain, New England Coast, Southern USA and most recently Italy, have inspired an exciting repertoire of paintings.

This spring Stephen moved out of the ‘Boathouse Studio’ at his summer home on Newboro Lake, and into a spacious new pine studio overlooking the bay. It is here at his summer cottage that he is inspired to paint the peaceful water scenes, canoeists, kayakers and fishermen. Workshops are scheduled from time to time for those wishing to benefit from his 25 years of experience and enthusiastic presentation style. He also has been invited to give workshops outside of Ontario in places such as Montana, New York, Georgia and Florida as well as cruise ships such as the Queen Mary 2(Mediterranean) and the Vista Fiord (Baltic).

Stephen’s winter retreat is on historic Jekyll Island Georgia, a thriving arts community and haven for those who appreciate nature. He teaches and exhibits at the Goodyear Gallery, garnering interest not only from theJekyll Island community, but nearby St Simon Island, Savannah, Atlanta and Jacksonville. In 2004 and 2007, Stephen was the featured artist during the month of February at the Goodyear Gallery, both very successful shows, and for the sixth consecutive year his work has won 1st place for Advanced Watercolour at the Jekyll Island Arts Festival.

In Canada, Stephen is represented at Studio 737 in Tweed, Tay River Gallery in Perth, and Artemisia in Westport.
